New Hope for Women Suffering Urinary Incontinence
2004
Coughing, sneezing and laughing need no longer lead to embarrassment for large numbers of women, with the availability on the Peninsula of a an improved procedure to overcome urinary incontinence.
SPARC key hole surgery is minimally invasive and can be performed as a day procedure or require only one night’s stay in hospital.
“Loss of bladder control is common among women of all ages and can have devastating social effects,” says urologist, at Peninsula Private Hospital, Mr Chris Love. “There’s a widespread misconception that urinary incontinence is an older woman’s disease and that it’s an inevitable consequence of aging, but many younger women develop the condition after giving birth.”
“This procedure involves using a nylon tape to hold the bladder in place. A post operative catheter is not required, so there is minimal discomfort for the patient. Most can return to normal activity within 7 to 10 days.
The incidence of urinary incontinence increases with pregnancy, childbirth and age. Around 25% of women aged between 35 and 50 years and 50% of women over 75 suffer from the condition.
While only an occasional problem for many, urinary incontinence can worsen with time and many women will avoid social contact and become home bound due to the embarrassing nature of the ailment.
“Women as young as 25 years and younger will occasionally notice urinary leakage on coughing, laughing, sneezing or jumping,” says Mr Love. “Some will suffer from pain and leakage during sex and may be bothered so much they cease sexual activity. Among older women, loss of bladder control is one of the most frequent reasons for admission into a nursing home.”
In recent years, the topic of urinary incontinence has started to become less taboo and more women are seeking help. Early diagnosis and treatment can often completely cure the problem.
